About Us

Elbon Mill Farm is a small family farm established in 2013 in the beautiful hills of Buckhannon, WV. We are a sustainably minded farm, focusing on methods that improve the soil, water, and wild animal habitats of our 25 acre farm. We use integrated farming practices that allow our farming enterprises to support and work in concert with each other.

We offer pedigreed rex rabbits to other farmers and homesteaders, with a focus on meat production and fur quality.

We raise heritage Cayuga ducks known for their black eggs, flavorful meat, fabulous foraging abilities, and wonderful mothering skills.

We are working on preserving the Sulmtaler chicken. Sulmtalers are a rare Austrian heritage breed used primarily for meat. Currently there are very few breeders in the US. We think with thoughtful and purposeful culling Sulmtalers could be a valuable, and tasty, addition to the heritage poultry market.

We are also home of the appropriately named Zombie Aflockalypser chickens. They are a mixed breed created here when we grew tired of pure breeds that were more suited to a poultry show than a homestead. We wanted birds that could thrive in nearly any conditions. We have been breeding them now for 4 years and they are better than we hoped for. They are amazing layers averaging 5.8 eggs per bird, per week, in nearly every color except pure white and dark chocolate. They are both cold hardy and heat tolerant, well suited to WV’s very distinct changing seasons. Zombie Aflockalypsers are amazing broody hens. Because they are very predator savvy they aren’t quite as “in your lap” friendly as some breeds, but the roosters have not been aggressive to humans. We continue to let nature do most of the culling and continue to be impressed by how great they are for homesteads.

Every spring we start hundreds of heirloom vegetable and herb seedlings in our small greenhouse. Heirloom varieties offer flavors not often found in hybrids. These are the varieties our grandparents grew, and they’re often hard to find today in local greenhouses and box stores. We use the seedlings we need for our own gardens, and offer the extras for sale to other growers looking to try something different.

Here at Elbon Mill Farm we are constantly experimenting and trying new things in an attempt to not only improve our methods, but also our small piece of the world. We hope to be a valuable resource for others trying to do the same.
